Belgian Gaming Authority Launches “Play Legally” Campaign to Combat Illegal Gambling

The Belgian Gaming Authority (CGA) has initiated a fresh initiative titled “Play Legally” to combat illicit gambling activities. This campaign was developed in collaboration with authorized online wagering providers in Belgium.

The initiative will commence today (April 26th) and continue until the commencement of the 2021 European Championship on June 11th.

The authority aims to enlighten consumers regarding the distinction between lawful and unlawful online gambling. They are employing the “Play Legally” emblem to assist individuals in identifying licensed operators. These operators have received approval from the authority and are subject to routine inspections.

The authority estimates that 20% of gambling patrons in Belgium opt to utilize unlicensed providers. These providers are not subject to any regulations and lack player protection measures. There is no assurance that winnings will be disbursed.

The authority cautions that gamblers often fail to recognize the hazards associated with using unlicensed providers. They may not even be aware if the website they are utilizing is legal.

In addition to using the “Play Legal” emblem, the initiative will feature a collection of short videos addressing frequently asked inquiries players might have regarding the distinction between legitimate and illicit operators, encompassing the hazards associated with engaging with the latter.

CJH stated that fresh video segments will be unveiled on a weekly basis until the commencement of the 2021 European Championship.

Last month, the regulatory body entered into a memorandum of understanding with its Dutch counterpart, Kansspelautoriteit. This agreement will witness the two regulatory entities collaborating closely on a diverse array of matters, including safeguarding players and combating unlawful gambling activities.

In February, Belgium enacted a royal decree that diminished the quantity of online sports betting licenses permitted within the jurisdiction from 34 to 31.
