Chile Approves Ban on Slot Machines Outside Casinos

The Chilean Senate has given its approval to a measure that prohibits slot machines from being operated outside of licensed gambling establishments. This legislation, which received unanimous support with 29 votes in favor, is now being reviewed by the lower chamber of the legislature.

The legislation defines slot machines as any electronic device that accepts wagers, provides users with a set amount of time to play, and awards prizes based on a random number generator. As slot machines are games of chance, they are forbidden outside of casinos that possess the necessary permits. This exclusion does not extend to online slot machines.

Individuals who violate these regulations could face a short period of incarceration and financial penalties of up to CLP$10.4m (£10,025/€11,694/US$13,911).

Potential vendors are required to submit their license applications to the Casino Regulatory Authority and the Public Ministry within 180 days of the bill becoming law.

This represents the most recent action taken by the Chilean government to regulate the gambling industry. The nation is scheduled to announce the legalization of online gambling in February.
