UK Advertising Watchdog Flags Betfred for Targeting Minors with Gambling Ads

The United Kingdom’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) intervened, rejecting a Betfred advertisement for violating regulations. Apparently, the ad ran during an episode of PrestonPlayz on Roku, a program popular among young Minecraft enthusiasts. The ASA disapproved, as the promotion showcased Betfred’s internet casino, featuring elements like slot machines and card games. They reasoned that children were likely viewing and, of course, gambling is inappropriate for minors. Betfred maintained they adhered to guidelines, employing sophisticated targeting technology to ensure the appropriate audience. However, the ASA remained unconvinced, noting that despite Roku requiring users to declare they are over 18, youngsters could still easily gain access.

The United Kingdom’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has raised concerns about a recent promotional campaign by gambling firm, Betfred, despite the company’s assertions that it targeted adults. The ASA contended that the advertisement’s style resembled children’s shows, increasing the likelihood of exposure to young audiences.

This ruling is the most recent in a series of decisions from the ASA regarding gambling promotions. A recent instance involved an Instagram advertisement featuring Mr. Potato Head for Mecca Bingo, which the ASA deemed irresponsible for implying gambling could elevate social status or self-worth. Another case involved a tweet by boxer Anthony Joshua for Betfred, with the ASA voicing apprehension about the athlete’s influence on under-18 demographics.

The ASA has directed Betfred to guarantee its future marketing efforts do not appear on platforms or during broadcasts with a significantly high proportion of underage viewers.
