Gambling Ads Scrutinized: UK Regulator Flags Misleading Income Claims

The United Kingdom’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) halted a Foxy Games advertisement for implying that engaging in slots and bingo was a route to financial independence.

The advertisement appeared in July 2020 as a Google search outcome for “generate income online,” and its message was straightforward: “Generate income online โ€“ Foxy Games โ€“ Engage in online gaming.” Individuals voiced disapproval, asserting that it presented gambling as a guaranteed method (pun intended!) to attain financial stability. The ASA concurred, stating that the phrase “generate income online” suggested a dependable revenue stream.

Foxy Games withdrew the advertisement, attributing it to an error. Nevertheless, the ASA prohibited it from ever resurfacing in that specific format.

Intriguingly, the ASA did not object to a comparable advertisement from Betfair. This television advertisement showcased a man placing a wager while hurrying to board a flight, accompanied by the slogan “When the enjoyment ceases, cease.” Although some contended that this elevated gambling above significant life occurrences, the ASA did not share this perspective. They believed the advertisement did not depict the man as being preoccupied with gambling or portray it as an indispensable aspect of his life.
